Basic Installation of Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog):

Get Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntulinux.org/
Install Ubuntu: If your 8600 is similar to mine, just start installing and wait 20 minutes. Everything works straight out of the box
Post-Install modifications/tweaks: Flash plugin for Firefox, Java plugin for Firefox. Watch this space for further developments.

No additional setup required so far -- everything Just Works.
